The Tightrope Walker – Genet
Inspired by his emotional attachment to circus performer Bentaga Abdullah, Jean Genet wrote Le Funambule (The Tightrope Walker). The text, a long love poem, is also a reflection on artists’ loneliness, the ambivalence of being an actor and the vacillation between anonymity and glory, between light and dark.
Jean Genet was a prominent and controversial French writer, poet and playwright. He wrote novels and consecrated works such as Le Balcon (The Balcony), Les Nègres (The Blacks) and Les Paravents (The Screens).
